Tide pod challenges, planking challenges, cinnamon challenges… so many challenges on the internet are pointless, potentially harmful and just odd. It is nice to find one that has a real focus that can enact change and actually make a difference.
I have been trying to get into shape for a few months now so I guess that is why my Facebook feed started showing me CrossFit competitions and exercise equipment sales but the ad that caught my eye was from the American Cancer Society for October Breast Cancer Fundraiser. The challenge is to run/walk 35 miles in the month of October and raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. This was something I could get behind so I signed up.
I needed a challenge though 35 miles in 31 days seemed too easy so I upped the ante with my own revision of the challenge.
My goal is to complete:
- 35 mile Run/Walk (Jog)
- 70 mile Bike
- 17.5 mile
Before October I decided to do a practice run and I got about a mile before I pretty much had to quite and just walk. I finished about 3 miles that day and the next day my legs were jelly. I was getting nervous because the challenge was going to start in just a few days and the goal I thought was going to be one of the easiest now seemed so hard.
The challenge started and after a few more nights out running I started to feel better about the running. I was even able to complete 5 miles without stopping. The next hurdle that I encountered was swimming. My Apple Watch was not correctly logging my laps. I had to purchase a waterproof lap counter so I could keep track of myself. After swimming nonstop for an hour my watch would tell me that I only swam 300 yards when I counted a 400-yard swim was completed in only 10 minutes.
Well hopefully with the new lap counter I will be able to complete this challenge without issues.
